CONCEPT

Our wish is to create a space where
people wake, reconnect, restart and recall what Japan is like.
In a Yamazato (Japanese mountain hamlet) in Oku-yamato, Nara prefecture,
our hotel is built among the mountains
with no convenience stores and scarce reception for electricity.

Its location is “a little inconvenient.”
Visitors breathe heavily walking up 
the long slope to the hotel.

Surely there is no convenience as in a city,
but here is a daily life where
you can enjoy great natural surroundings
changing its expression depending on the season and time, and
heartwarming communal relationships – 
you make what you need yourself and give others the rest. 

The lifestyle here can make a distinctive connection
of outside and inside, past and future, and self and others. 

We can realize ‘existence’ because of ‘non-existence’.

Atmosphere

The quiet accommodation is located at the base of the mountains.
Without distractive noise, you can realize that you have already become contented by letting yourself go and tuning into the sounds of the nature. 
Kind human relationships and rich nature will have you regain the energy to live with honest, pure feelings.

Area

The Yamazoe village was formed after the merger of three smaller villages.Various social areas were mixed from Nara, Kyoto and Mie prefectures, so the village has developed into an intercultural society.
This is a lively area, filled with both traditional customs and current technologies.As well as food, they convey information, a sense of community and safety, and a feeling of fun in everyday life! 

People

Our goal is to become a more ‘people-friendly’ person; however,
this does not mean to impose, or be imposed upon at anytime.
The staff of「 u m e, 」include people with disabilities, infirmities and
the elderly in our neighborhood.
This is because society consists of a variety of people and the harmony of them.
Our definition of ‘people-friendly’ person is the one who has
the capacity to acknowledge and accept the unique characteristics of those around.

House

We renovated a much more than 100-year-old house.
The owner of the original prestige house was Mr Kitai, the old Hatano village mayor.
We entirely saved the huge main pillar that you may not have seen before, a stunning Ranma transom, and the symbolic plum tree.
A lot of time and feelings were devoted to the house then as well as the money they made so hard.
Although there may be a tiny draft or small natural visitors from the ventilation of the ceiling, the structure of the house can let you grasp straightaway the meaning of the ‘house’ having observing the land for so many years.  

Food

We value sitting at the dining table altogether at「ume,」.
We eat seasonal foods with people who gathered at the same place on the same day.
“Wa” of wa-shoku (Japanese food), which we have nurtured, is said to have 5 meanings: total, harmony, relaxing, mixing, and peace.
Our wish is that visitors feel the moment right now and here through the food.
Needless to say, we provide dishes with local ingredients as much as possible.
Vegetarian, Halal, allergy-free foods can be provided.
Relaxing time for you through wa-shoku.
